Abortion: The Facts of Created Life & Myths of Choice and Ectopic Pregnancy

Even babies conceived ectopically are fully human persons created in the image of God, and are endowed by their Creator with just as much an inalienable right to life as every other child.
The Facts of Created Life
We know that at the beginning of a baby’s development, even his or her very first cell possesses all the genetics that comprise a real, unique human being, or person. If healthy, this little person will typically grow up and continue to live and develop through several predictable stages until natural death occurs many decades later, (barring some intervening intentional or accidental event that causes an earlier death.)
We also know that God, as our Creator, reserves the overall prerogatives over human life and death to Himself. The Bible is God’s all-sufficient Word to Mankind. In it He says:
“See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.”
- Deuteronomy 32:39
In this fallen world our Creator also righteously limits our prerogatives regarding the taking of innocent human life when He commands us:
“Thou shalt not kill.”
- Deuteronomy 5:17
From these and other Scriptures, we know that all human beings are persons created in the image of God, and as such possess a God-given right to life. The only Biblical exceptions to this prohibition against taking human life are: 1. Lives may justly be taken in lawful warfare, 2. The government may justly execute individuals who have committed crimes worthy of death, and 3. Individuals may justly take lives in lawful self-defense:
“If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.”
- Exodus 22:2
The use of lethal force in self-defense is only lawful when the aggressor is about to commit a crime worthy of death. Specifically, the use of lethal force in self-defense is lawful in order to ward off what a person reasonably believes to be an imminent and potentially deadly physical attack against his, or another innocent person’s life. Such an attack would constitute the crime of aggravated assault, and if successful, would become the crime of murder. According to God’s Word, killing the innocent is murder, and is worthy of death:
“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.”
- Genesis 9:6
Rebelling against God by killing innocent people is serious. It is imperative then that we understand the issue correctly and come to…
The Personhood Movement is a wing of the modern Pro-life Movement which has emphasized the fact that human life as well as legal personhood begins at the moment of natural fertilization, (or it’s sexual or asexual human reproduction equivalent.) As such, each child from the beginning of his existence possesses an inalienable right to life, and being innocent before the law, (because he lacks the capacity of intent to commit any crime worthy of death), no child from the beginning of his existence may lawfully be put to death by anyone for any reason.
This is the true, biblical, pro-life position. This position honors the truth of God’s Word, and obviously may require great self-sacrifice, for we may suffer much in this life if we truly hold to it. We may suffer the loss of our freedom and our time, our money and possessions, and even in certain situations our health or even our very lives, in order to care for our sick or infirm children, (or spouses, siblings, or elderly), but we are commanded by God to do so to the utmost of our ability anyway:
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith…”
- 1 Timothy 5:8
The Opposite View: Euthanasia
One modern trend of the unbelievers, (popularized in modern times by the Nazi’s before WWII), is found in the Euthanasia Movement. The word “euthanasia” comes from two Greek words meaning “easy” and “death”, and translated into English today it would mean: “mercy-killing.” Many unbelievers today who advocate “euthanasia” say that they are for killing terminally-ill old people in order to supposedly save them from painful and inevitable deaths. According to God’s Word however, we Christians know that such killing of innocent persons constitutes the crime of murder and is therefore wickedness.
Euthanasia in the Pro-life Movement?
While rightly decrying such so-called “mercy-killing”, some however in the Pro-life Personhood Movement have felt compelled to believe and teach that killing innocent pre-born babies can be permissible, when such killing is undertaken in order to avoid, (what they have been led to believe is), the inevitable death of the baby and painful death of the mother.
Though this “mercy-killing” is just as deadly to babies as “mercy-killing” is to the elderly, some in the Personhood Movement have put forward the argument that such killing is only wrong if it is “intentional killing.” The word “intentional” is the key word, for if one specifies that only “intentional” killing is wrong, it implies that unintentional killing of some innocent babies, in certain circumstances, would actually be ethical and moral. For example:
According to an online article entitled “Are There Rare Cases When an Abortion Is Justified?” the Association of Pro-life Physicians says:
“The abortion exception for the life of the mother is the exception that most commonly seduces the sincere pro-lifer. The scenario in which this exception is most frequently packaged is an ectopic pregnancy, which is when the embryo attaches somewhere inside the mother’s body in a place other than the inner lining of the uterus. It is argued that in an ectopic pregnancy, an abortion must be performed in order to save the mother’s life.”
Based upon this paragraph alone, one might conclude that the Association of Pro-life Physicians might be 100% against abortion with no exceptions. However, reading further proves this is not the case.
A little further down, they then continue with the next statement below which is absolutely untrue. (More on this later…):
“There are no cases of ectopic pregnancies in a fallopian tube surviving…”
They go on to write:
“It is only ethical to remove the tubal pregnancy if spontaneous resolution does not occur after watchful waiting and if the physician is 100% certain that there are no twins. At this point, the embryo in the fallopian tube is likely to be dead and, even if not, the death is unavoidable and unintentional, and the procedure is necessary to save the life of the mother.” [emphasis mine.]
They admit above that they believe deliberately aborting the pregnancy, (which kills the child), may become necessary in order to save the life of the mother.
Amazingly, they then go on to say the exact opposite:
“In conclusion, there are no occasions in which the intentional killing of the pre-born child is justified. Scientific fact and divine law are clear: life begins at conception, and there are no exceptions to the prohibition of intentionally killing an innocent human being.”
Here it is seen that they have actually just re-defined the word “abortion” to only mean what they call “intentional killing.” They would lead us to believe that ending pregnancies to save the life of a mother isn’t really abortion after all. Rather, they couch the killing in completely contradictory terms. They say that killing the child was “unintentional”, even though the doctor doing so obviously intended to end the pregnancy before the child could possibly survive outside the mother.
They in effect are giving the doctor in such a circumstance the following instructions: First, wait and see what happens. If the baby doesn’t die on its own and the mother’s life seems to be at risk, get permission to end the pregnancy, and then you can kill the baby to save the mother’s life.
“…except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken?…”
- 1 Corinthians 14:9
“Doublespeak” is a verbal, (or by extension in this case, written), form of self-deception known as “doublethink.” Webster’s defines the word “doublethink” as “a simultaneous belief in two contradictory ideas.”
For instance, some in the Pro-Life movement very much believe in their minds that they are 100% against all killing of pre-born babies, yet at the very same time they also believe that killing some pre-born babies can be 100% moral! In order to reconcile this obvious “doublethink”, they say that the babies whose deaths they believe were morally justified were only killed “unintentionally.”
Some examples of so-called “unintentional” killing might be:
- Giving chemotherapy to pregnant mothers with cancer, (where they know it will most likely kill the baby); but doing it anyway to save the mother’s life.
- Or in the case of tubal ectopic pregnancies, where they go in when the baby is still alive and cut out the tube, (baby and all), knowing full well this kills the baby, but doing it anyway to save the mother’s life.
In both of these kinds of cases, the “personhood” of the baby is now moot. The doctor is only intending to save the mother (they say), just not the baby. Therefore the baby’s death is only “unintentional”, and therefore even though the doctor performed the action that automatically results in the baby’s death (i.e. the “abortion”), they say
it wasn’t his fault, because he just intended to end the pregnancy, not kill the baby. Is this not confusion and doublespeak?
For another example, consider this hypothetical question posed to American Right to Life, (a self-described “leader” in the Personhood wing of the Pro-life Movement), regarding a possible exception for the “life of the mother”:
“The Maryland Personhood Amendment has no exceptions, so what if a pregnancy threatens the life of the mother?”
American Right to Life answers:
“The doctor’s goal should be to save mom and the baby if possible. The goal should never be to kill the mother to save the baby, nor to kill the child to save the mother. In an ectopic pregnancy for example, we typically save mom and the baby tragically dies. But our goal should always be, if possible, save the baby also.”
This sounds like they may be 100% against abortion with no exceptions. However, reading further on reveals that they are not. They do advocate abortion when they believe the mother’s life is in danger, (which they euphemistically call “deliver[ing] the baby as soon as possible”), even though the baby cannot possibly survive in the most likely scenario of an early ectopic pregnancy:
“…if the mother’s life is threatened by her pregnancy, her doctor would deliver the baby as soon as possible, and never stop midway to kill the baby.”
This is doublespeak, for when the doctor ends the pregnancy by removing the baby before the baby can possibly survive outside the mother, he is killing the baby.
American Right to Life goes on to reveal that they have re-defined what the word “abortion” means:
“However, the very idea of delaying the saving of a mom in order to stop midway and kill the baby is such an obvious cruelty and deception that it exposes the hard-heartedness of those who argue for such exceptions. Abortion is always wrong, without exception, and should be abolished.
Here again, we see the word “abortion” has been re-defined to mean what they might summarize as only “intentional killing.” Again, ending pregnancies before the baby can possibly survive in order to save the life of a mother isn’t really abortion after all, they say. Rather, they couch the killing in completely contradictory and euphemistic terms.
Here again, they in effect are giving the doctor in such a circumstance the following instructions: First, assess if the mother’s life seems to be threatened; if so, then get permission to end the pregnancy, and then you can kill the baby to save the mother’s life.
What does the word “abortion” really mean?
Webster’s – 1828: Abortion n. 1. The act of miscarrying, or producing young before the natural time, or before the fetus is perfectly formed.
Webster’s – 1913: Abortion n. 1 The act of giving premature birth; particularly, the expulsion of the human fetus prematurely, or before it is capable of sustaining life; miscarriage.
* It is sometimes used for the offense of procuring a premature delivery, but strictly the early delivery is the abortion, “causing or procuring abortion” is the full name of the offense. Abbott.
Webster’s – Current: abor·tion n. 1 : the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus
Three key points are to be taken from this:
- For the last two centuries of modern English, “performing an abortion” simply means ending a pregnancy before the baby is able to successfully sustain life outside the mother.
- The reason why we are against “abortion” therefore is because abortion by definition, (one way or another) always results in the death of a person, (i.e. the baby.)
- Since by definition abortion always results in the death of the baby, we believe that those who commit abortion are in fact killing a person.
What does the word “deliver” really mean?
Webster’s – 1828: DELIVER, v.t.
1. To free; to release, as from restraint; to set at liberty; as, to deliver one from captivity.
2. To rescue, or save.
Webster’s – 1913: Deliver v.t.
1. To set free from restraint; to set at liberty; to release; to liberate, as from control; to give up; to free; to save; to rescue from evil actual or feared; — often with from or out of; as, to deliver one from captivity, or from fear of death.
Webster’s – Current: de·liv·er transitive verb
1 : to set free <and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil — Matthew 6:13(Authorized Version)>
Four key points are to be taken from this:
- For the last two centuries of modern English, the word “deliver” has denoted the freeing or saving someone from harm. That’s why the word is used with regard to mothers giving birth to children.
- Giving birth can be dangerous to both, so when the baby is successfully born with no harm, he is said to be “delivered”, (or “set free or saved”), from the danger of the birth.
- If there is then no harm to the mother, she is also said to be “delivered”, (or “set free or saved”) from the danger of the birth.
- Obviously, if the woman’s pregnancy is aborted before the baby can possibly survive, then the doctor who removes the baby from the mother is only delivering the child to an untimely death. In the natural sense of the term, the dead baby certainly was not “set free”, “saved”, or “rescued” from anything.
What does the word “intentional” mean?:
Webster’s’ – 1828: INTEN’TIONAL, a. Intended; designed; done with design or purpose. The act was intentional, not accidental.
What does the word “accidental” mean?:
Webster’s’ – 1828: ACCIDENT’AL, a. 1. Happening by chance, or rather unexpectedly; casual; fortuitous, taking place not according to the usual course of things; opposed to that which is constant, regular, or intended, as an accidental visit.
Two key points are to be taken from this:
- The foreseen result of something done “intentionally” is no accident.
- Therefore, it is the height of absurdity to say that a child’s death was “accidental” or “unintended” after one intentionally removes a child from the mother’s body before he or she can possibly survive. Rather, it would be an accident if the baby somehow miraculously survived.
If words mean anything, intentionally ending a pregnancy before the baby can possibly survive on his own, by definition is committing abortion.
Ectopic “Truths” Proven False
In ectopic pregnancies, babies attach themselves in the fallopian tube, to the ovary, or elsewhere in the abdominal cavity. This condition can be dangerous to the mother and child.
Just because one is told that a baby was conceived ectopically however, doesn’t mean that the child or mother is automatically going to die. Here are a couple of documented examples:
In 2005, a baby was conceived outside the womb in the abdominal cavity; both mother and child survived:
In 2000, another baby was conceived outside the womb and both mother and child survived:
Documented Tubal Ectopic Pregnancy Survival
We were told earlier that all tubal ectopic pregnancies, if allowed to develop on their own will fail and that all the babies in such cases will die, but is this really true?
No, it is entirely false.
In 1999, what doctors said is impossible happened: Ronan Ingram was conceived in the fallopian tube and survived thanks to God and a mother who would not abort him:
But What If…
Furthermore, even if the baby does not survive an ectopic tubal pregnancy, it is not true that the fallopian tube will automatically rupture and the mother will die. In many cases (perhaps as high as 77% of the time), the baby does not survive, but there is no harm to the mother either! In a majority of cases, performing an abortion wasn’t even necessary to save the life of the mother. Please consider the following:
At the Crossroad – Which Way?
The fact that all babies are persons from the very beginning of their development doesn’t allow for any exceptions. If the baby really is an innocent “person”, then killing the baby will always be wrong, even to supposedly “save” someone else’s life. Therefore, killing the innocent in order to supposedly save another, whether “directly” or “indirectly”, is entering into a Faustian bargain; it’s like making a wager with the devil. In effect, we would be “saving” one life by killing an innocent little baby’s life.
But Jesus said:
“He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.”
- John 12:25
The truth is this: The ones who love their lives in this world lose them. Unless they repent, the people who will do anything to save their own skins will ultimately perish everlastingly in hell. But those who refuse to sin, (even if it means losing their lives in this world), will one day everlastingly gain them back!
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”
- Revelation 12:11
Now You Know the Truth…
And Jesus said:
“…the truth shall make you free.”
- John 8:32
Perhaps in times past, dear reader, you were ignorant of the documented fact that children and mothers can and do survive ectopic pregnancies. Perhaps in times past God overlooked your ignorance, but now you are faced with a choice:
“…the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent…”
- Acts 17:30
Know and understand that killing the innocent is wrong. It’s wrong because God says it is wrong and one day we will all have to reckon with Him:
“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him…”
- Revelation 1:7
“…we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God”
- Romans 14:10-12
Dear reader: Now is the time to choose:
“…I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life…”
- Deuteronomy 30:19
What To Do If You or Someone You Love Suspects Ectopic Pregnancy:
First: Wait on the Lord. He has promised to give you strength to overcome the world:
“…they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
- Isaiah 40:31
Second: Trust in the Lord. God in His sovereignty has brought this situation to pass. He will faithfully lead you through it:
“Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.”
- 1 Peter 4:19
Third: Do no harm to the child! Fear the Lord and love the child enough to give God a chance to save you both. Do not allow yourself either to be fooled by Satan’s lies, or swayed by man’s inaccurate and/or incomplete knowledge:
“For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.”
- James 2:11
Fourth: Rest in the Lord. Remember, and take comfort in the fact that with God all things are possible. Even our Lord Jesus prayed:
“… Abba, Father!, all things are possible unto thee!…”
- Mark 14:36
Fifth: Pray to the God of the Impossible, that it would be His will to allow the doctors to even save you both. Remember that God can work miracles. The bible and history are full of them, and we have seen that He is still working wonders today: Remember little Ronan.
“He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion…”
- Psalm 111:4
…and take heart in the fact that your life is precious in His sight too. Do seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe bleeding or pain and/or suspect that your life is in any danger. Such pain may indicate that the Lord has already taken the child to a better place in Glory, but even if so, you need not die also.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
- John 15:13
Allow yourself to be conformed into the image of Jesus Christ. Remember His example: the Strong laid down His life for the weak. The First made Himself last… And,
The Lord will abundantly bless your faith in Him. He will carry your little-one in His loving arms, and will gently lead you all the way…
“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
- Isaiah 40:11
