November 2019: The British and Greek energy company Energean has made a significant oil and natural gas find off of the coast of Israel. 25 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas and 34 million barrels of light oil has been confirmed.
These amounts will be in addition to the initial discoveries of 68 bcm of natural gas and 33 million barrels of light oil.
“This is an excellent result from the Karish North appraisal sidetrack, confirming in place volumes in the top half of pre-drill estimates and increasing our recoverable volumes in Israel by 0.9 Tcf (25 BCM) of gas plus 34 million barrels of light oil or condensate. Today’s news delivers upon another commitment that we had made to our shareholders and the successful results allow us to continue our gas marketing efforts in the region with a goal to fully utilize the capacity of our 8 BCMA FPSO. These finds are in addition to two tremendous areas of natural gas. The Leviathan oil and gas basin in the Mediterranean Sea is believed to hold 1.7 billion barrels of oil. The basin also holds an estimated 122 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (Noble Energy, U.S. Geological Survey). A second oil and natural gas basin is the Tamar. It is estimated to hold 7.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (Noble Energy).
Israel is looking to export their natural resources to western Europe. These exports will cut into the bottom lines of Russia and Turkey. More bait for a future invasion of Israel. At some point in the future, Russia and its allies will invade Israel for their “great spoil”. They have economic motivation and reason to invade.
