Of Gummy Worms and All Great Things

There is nothing greater in this life to me than to hear that still, small voice. That the Lord God, Creator of the heavens and the earth and the seas and everything in them, would deign to cross the threshold of heaven and earth and whisper into the ear of my heart never fails to not only astound, but greatly humble me.

When this happens I am always reminded of 1 Kings 19:11-13:

11” And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle…”

Then I worship my King, usually singing to Him the song “How He Loves” by The David Crowder Band, especially these lyrics –

“And heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss/and my heart turns violently inside of my chest/I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I see how He loves us”

He loves us. Think about that for a moment. The one, true living God, Yahweh, the Alpha and the Omega, the great I AM, loves you and me, and it is not a love with which humans love. No. It is agape love. Agápē is Greek and its definition is “love: the highest form of love, charity; the love of God for man and of man for God”. This is covenant, unconditional, serving love that transcends everything – time, space, circumstances and our own sin.

His Holy Word tells us that when we seek Him with all our heart, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). Where will we find Him? Everywhere.; the sunrise, a bird’s song, a friend’s well-timed call, a scent that triggers memories of better days, a Scripture that speaks to your circumstances found when you were not looking for it, (and even a bag of gummy worms sent by a brother in Christ who barely knows me but yet knew it would put a much needed smile on my face).

This morning, feeling very unwell and quite dizzy, it was the slightest whisper into my heart that said, “It’s the medicine.” I had been weaning myself down from a medication, and I went down too far, too fast, not realizing I had not cut it down the correct amount when I filled my pill box for the week. ‘I’ did not inform ‘myself’ of this, because if ‘I’ had already known, it would have never happened in the first place (Right? Duh lol). I immediately took the amount I had forgotten and within an hour I was feeling much better. In that moment of silent, inner communion with my Lord, just sitting on my porch with my neighbor’s cat and taking in the beauty of autumn, the living God of the universe leaned into this being of clay, and whispered wisdom into my heart.

The Lord God has always been in communion with His children, at times even visibly, and sometimes only with those whom He chose from among the people, such as Moses and Isaiah, to be His mouthpiece. We have a special closeness to our Lord that no generation prior to Christ’s sacrifice and redemption had – We not only have God WITH us, but we have God IN us through His Holy Spirit of truth. He still speaks to His children, through His Spirit into our own. He comforts, guides, rescues, and loves.Oh, how He loves.
