The Pride of Man is his Greatest Weakness

Author: Guy Micholic

Throughout the entirety of human history, a reoccurring cycle of events has played itself out, always starting with the unbridled love, grace and generosity of an awesome and All Powerful Creator God. The beauty and wonder of creation is a testimony of his desire to bestow blessings and unlimited favor upon what he considers to be his greatest creation, mankind itself. His untouchable attributes are manifest in every detail of creation, from the smallest particle of matter to the vastness of space. Why is it that man continually seeks to reap the harvest of the good garden without giving due honor to its owner? From the inception of sin, the disobedience of Adam and Eve, to the rise and fall of Babylon, and in all the kingdoms of ancient times, a single common thread has been woven through history effecting every kingdom and people, and has led to their ruin. It is pride.

The Tower of Babel

I’ve heard it said that there is no room for humility in greatness. My belief is that without humility, greatness will never be achieved.

You would think after all the examples of trial and error clearly illustrated from our troubled history, that man would have learned the futility of “utopia” building. Scripture emphatically points out that the Kingdom of God will not be a construct of human ingenuity, but already exists in the heavens and is a creation of YHWH himself. Additionally, it will not be a place for “just anyone” to enter. No sin or pride of man will exist within its gates! Have we become so pompous a species as to believe we can achieve greatness through the trivial pursuits of our own imaginations once again?

A civilization cannot technologically advance itself into becoming the “Kingdom of God”. God himself is not “universal mind” that just floats around in the cosmos, waiting for us to figure out how to tap into it. He exists outside of our ability to define him, outside of time, space and matter as well. The existence of our reality is not a blueprint created for us to discern for the purposes of creating a playground for our enjoyment and entertainment. No, we were placed here for a far greater purpose. That purpose, simply stated is to glorify the one who created us.

Psalm 8:

[1] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
[2] Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
[3] When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
[4] What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
[5] For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
[6] Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
[7] All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
[8] The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
[9] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Ancient Concepts Revisited

This supposed “New age” that mankind seems so anxious to usher in is in actuality an ancient concept retranslated into modern vernacular. Where does this ancient concept have its origin? You can find it within the first chapters of Genesis.

Genesis 3:

[1] Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
[2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
[3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
[4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
[5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

I think we all know how the story goes from there, It didn’t work out so well for Adam and Eve. Since then there have always been factions within our ranks who continue to believe the same lie, that they can become like God. The results of such endeavors always end in failure and judgement. When will we learn the lessons YHWH so clearly illustrated within his Holy Word? There is no percentage in attempting to outwit the one who created us? We cannot and will never be able to build our own lasting kingdom! Only God himself is capable of such a grandiose and monumental task.

There is irrefutable evidence within Scripture to prove the point that I’m struggling to get across, that no efforts of mankind will bring forth the final and lasting Kingdom that is the sole possession of God himself.

Daniel 2:

[31] Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
[32] This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
[33] His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
[34] Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
[35] Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
[36] This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
[37] Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

[38] And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
[39] And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
[40] And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
[41] And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
[42] And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
[43] And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
[44] And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
[45] Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

The best knowledge that can be acquired is the realization that humility before God and obedience to his word is what really pleases him. He couldn’t care less about our advances in technology, in fact they may very well offend him if improperly prioritized. Mankind has been given a wondrous gift, let us stop tainting it with pride or abusing it with self indulgent abandon. The earth and everything in it is subject to the One who created it so let us not continue in the ridiculous notion that we are the ultimate masters of all we survey.
